Long before the days of the 3D movie, when I was growing up, 3D was a rare experience. It was reserved for those lucky enough to get a pair of 3D glasses as a prize in their cereal box, or the kids who had a bright red View-Master with more than one or two reels. (Remember those?) Now that I’m older and 3D movies are in every theater, the experience is undoubtedly still special... but it’s a lot easier to experience now that you don’t need to struggle with those flimsy blue and red glasses!
We’ve come a long way since the days of 3D viewfinders and cardboard glasses, and wall decor is no exception. Though a very large majority of our wall decals are two-dimensional—that is, they’re completely flat—we’re slowly expanding our product catalog to include some really special, creative “3D” wall decor. Here’s a closer look at just a few of these items.
Foam tiles are one of our new favorite ideas for wall decals. These tiles are thin, flexible, and can either be applied as-is or cut easily into different shapes or sizes. Each pack of four tiles gives you enough to create a small mock “headboard,” as you see above, or to create your own unique piece of wall decor.
One of the ideas we had for these tiles was to cut them into small strips that could then be used to create a peel & stick frame for photos, or wider strips (say, four per tile) that could be assembled into a 3D room border. We might cover this idea in an upcoming blog post, so stay tuned!
These foam wall stickers from Italian company Crearreda are the latest innovation in peel & stick wall decor. They’re cut from foam instead of printed material, so they “pop” off the wall instead of lying flat. It’s decor you can actually feel!
Due to their weight, foam wall decals use a slightly different adhesive than other RoomMates wall decals. For this reason, we recommend applying them only to completely flat, painted walls, and avoiding repositioning them whenever possible. Though they’ve performed quite well in our tests so far, we don’t want to make any promises we can’t keep! That’s why we’re officially calling Crearreda’s wall stickers “removable,” rather than “repositionable.”
